Tourism is one of the most important means of income for many countries. In 2010 almost one billion international tourist arrivals were reported worldwide with France being the most popular travel destination. With the steadily rising tourist numbers, ecological tourism becomes more and more important. Personally, I love travelling and I enjoy seeing different places and doing things I have never done before. I especially like doing stuff that´s special. Here are two ecotourism destinations I consider both special and worth checking out.
When learning Spanish in Ecuador, one of the first sayings I was taught by my host mother was “La plata mejor gastada es la plata de los viajes” which translates into “The money best spent is the money spent on traveling”. I am sure that most of you agree. Here are some more of my favorite pictures.
Even though 62% of males and 48% of females play in competitive sports in the USA, almost 67% of US citizens are obese ranking them 3rd in the top 10 fattest countries in the world. Even though everybody likes winning competitions, this one is definitely not the sort you´re longing to win. Success usually goes along with status, prosperity and a good feeling about yourself and your achievements. Nevertheless, few people succeed right away. Usually, the first attempt is followed by failure, followed by a second attempt and so on. I guess the most important thing in sports and life is not to give up. Here are some of my favorite quotes on sports and success.
I am sure that most if not all of you have already played online games. Some require plenty of experience and time combined with a premium user account. I don´t really want to talk about any of these cash cows but rather focus on the simple, free games, which one might play once in a while to have fun or relax for a little while. These games are, of course, just like anything eles in the world, a matter of taste. Nevertheless, you might want to read on and find out, whether you might enjoy the arcade game “Jewelanche”, the puzzle game “Gluey”, the action game “Defend your Nuts”, the sound mixing game “Break in the Road” or the strategy game “Home Sheep Home”.
Everybody takes pictures. Some take thousands, others take very few. Some take pictures using their smartphone, others use high end equipment worth thousands of dollars. Whatever gadget you use, photographs can be virtually anything: astonishing, fascinating, breathtaking, amazing, shocking, horrible, disgusting, funny, …you name it. Since I love taking pictures, I make sure to take my camera (a rather cheap one by the way) wherever possible, especially when I travel. Here are some of my favorite photographs. I am nowhere near being a photographer, but I think it´s worth taking a look. See for yourselves…
In 2006 Louann Brizendine, the director of San Francisco´s Women´s Mood and Hormone Clinic, claimed that women used about 20000 words, whereas men apparently got on with as little as 7000 words. Thanks to Science magazine researchers put this assertion right as Texanian studies showed women to use an average of 16250 words per day and men communicated using 15669 words per day. With the difference in numbers being nowhere near statistical significance, men and women actually need the same number of words in their everyday life. But just like anywhere else in life, quality is more important than quantity. Thus, I would like to leave you thinking about these quotes. Maybe you also consider them inspiring, funny or simply true.
With an average time of 35 hours (US citizens, 2010) spent on the web within a month, more than 2 billion internet users worldwide and the same number of videos watched on YouTube per day, there is no doubt that the internet is the fastest growing medium. In 2010, 250 million people joined the social network Facebook, 100 million new accounts were added on Twitter and more than 3000 pictures per minute were uploaded on Flickr. I am sure hardly anyone of you could imagine life without the worldwide web. Nevertheless, with an estimated 50 billion webpages according to Google´s index in December 2011, there´s not only great sites around. Here are some online services I consider helpful…
Art can be virtually anything from paintings to photos and sculptures. Everyone is attracted by different kinds of art. Some love sketches, others modern drawings and some don´t see the purpose of art at all. Personally, I love extraordinary pieces of art made by using unique or rarely used techniques that might not seem to relate to to art in any way. Thus, I would like to introduce you to the street artist phenomenon BLU, the tape artist Mark Khaisman, the sand artist Ilana Yahav, the plastic bottle recycler Aurora Robson and the cereal artist Ryan Alexiev. Let´s get stARTed.
